Preview and Prediction

The Carolina Hurricanes are facing a significant deficit against the New Jersey Devils, despite the fact that the season has only just begun.

This sets the stage for Tuesday night's game between the two teams in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Devils have gotten off to a strong start with a record of 4-1-0, while the Hurricanes have only played one game so far.

Carolina's season began with a 4-1 loss at home to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night.

Their second game of the season was supposed to take place on Saturday against Tampa Bay, but it was postponed due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Milton in the region last week. This gave the Hurricanes more time to dwell on their opening defeat.

"Usually I would prefer to just play after a game like that," said Carolina captain Jordan Staal.

While the Hurricanes have been in a holding pattern, the Devils have been making strides. One of the most promising developments has been rookie Seamus Casey scoring three goals, including one in Monday's 3-0 victory over the Utah Hockey Club.

"I haven't always been a goal scorer, so to start with three goals is maybe not something I expected," said Casey. "But I'm just trying to keep it simple and take advantage of my opportunities."

Despite not scoring a goal yet, Jack Hughes has still been making an impact for the Devils with three assists and 15 shots on goal.

"Jack will eventually start scoring and things will fall into place as we continue to play," said Devils coach Sheldon Keefe. "He has been playing well defensively, which is a good foundation for his game."

The Devils have played three games since returning from their opening two-game series against the Buffalo Sabres in Prague. They bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 5-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday before winning again on Monday.

Forward Stefan Noesen, who spent the last three seasons with the Hurricanes, scored a goal against Utah. He has recorded at least one point in four of the Devils' five games, all of which they have won.

In Carolina's first game, Tampa Bay scored twice on power plays and added two empty-net goals.

"We weren't prepared as a penalty kill unit," Staal admitted. "In a game like that, it only takes one mistake. We need to improve in that area."

Now, the Hurricanes will try to get back on track against a team that has played a significant number of games already.

"It's not ideal," said Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour. "Early in the year is when you want to play. We can make excuses, but we'll get into a rhythm at some point. It would be better to get there sooner rather than later."

The Hurricanes have had extra time between games, but they have not focused on any particular aspect of their game given the time of year.

"We need to improve in all areas," said Brind'Amour.

Carolina is expected to start Pyotr Kochetkov in goal on Tuesday night, after announcing their opening night goalie assignment on game day with Frederik Andersen getting the nod.

This will be the Hurricanes' final home game for over two weeks, as their October schedule is affected by the North Carolina State Fair taking place across the street from the arena.

New Jersey Devils vs. Carolina Hurricanes

Nino Niederreiter and Martin Necas each delivered a goal and an assist as the Carolina Hurricanes drilled the visiting New Jersey Devils in a 5-2 victory Friday night.

Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek made 35 saves for his first triumph in his last four outings.

Warren Foegele, Andrei Svechnikov and Joel Edmundson also scored for Carolina, which improved to 23-3-1 when scoring a game's first goal. Brett Pesce provided two assists.

The Hurricanes were playing their first home game in nearly two weeks following a 2-2-0 road swing.

Mirco Mueller and Joey Anderson scored for the Devils, who were playing their third game in four nights. Anderson, a right winger, scored his first goal of the season with 5:03 remaining.

The Devils were unable to build on Thursday night's victory against Detroit. They went 0-for-4 on the power play.

New Jersey goalie Louis Domingue made 26 saves.

The outcome avenged a Carolina loss from early November. The teams have two more meetings this season.

It was the first time in seven games that Carolina posted the first goal. That came from Niederreiter just 3:43 into the game. He has now scored in consecutive home games.

Mueller tied it for the Devils less than four minutes later. His only other goal came Dec. 13.

Then Foegele's goal put the Hurricanes ahead to stay with more than eight minutes to play in the opening period. It was his first goal in a 13-game stretch.

Svechnikov scored the only goal of the second period, set up by passing from Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho.

Necas' 15th goal of the season was unassisted, coming 1:44 into the third period. He assisted on the game's first goal.

The Devils held center Nico Hischier out of the lineup for another game despite speculation that he might be ready to return from an injury that has sidelined him since Feb. 1.
